How to Ease First Day Preschool Jitters: Tips for Parents

The first day of preschool can be exciting—but also nerve-wracking for both kids and parents. Discover practical tips to ease anxiety, build confidence, and make the transition smoother for your little one.

Whether your child’s first day of preschool is slated for the next fall season, or you’re embarking on this milestone in the middle of the school year, it’s normal for children–and their families–to be anxious as they  anticipate this transition. Rest assured the staff at Owl Hill Learning Academy has years of valuable experience in helping children–and their families–gain comfort and confidence in preschool.

Ways to Help Ease Your Child’s Preschool Fears

New faces. Being away from parents. A new routine. Starting preschool with some anxiety is common among preschoolers, so if there are some tears or expressed fears, don’t be alarmed. Here are some tips to help your child:

  • Visit Us: Come see the fun! We encourage parents to schedule a visit and tour of Owl Hill Learning Academy before the first day. And yes–please bring your child!
  • Establish a Consistent Routine: Predictable routines provide comfort. Have a set bedtime, morning routine, and drop-off/pick-up times at school. Think about what your morning routine will look like when preschool begins, and try implementing a few of those steps before the first day.
  • Focus on the Fun: Talk positively about school. Mention fun activities they’ll enjoy (playing with friends, art projects, story time).
  • Practice Separations: Start with short separations at home (leaving them with a trusted family member for a few minutes). Gradually increase the duration.
  • Bring a Comfort Item: A favorite stuffed animal, a blanket, or a picture of your child’s family can provide a sense of security.
  • Warm Goodbyes: Quick, decisive goodbyes are often best. Prolonged goodbyes can increase anxiety. Give a warm hug, a simple “I love you, have a great day,” and leave promptly.
  • Open Communication: Talk openly about their feelings. Let them know it’s okay to feel anxious and that you understand.

“I’ve Tried Everything, Now What?”

So you’ve tried all the tips and tricks, those above and those from other moms and friends, yet your child doesn’t seem to be warming up to the idea of preschool. What now?

  • Involve the Teacher: Talk to your child’s teacher. They can provide you with insight regarding your child’s demeanor during the day. Maybe the tears stop as soon as you leave. Share any concerns and discuss strategies that work best for your child.
  • Reevaluate if your child is ready for preschool. Every child is unique and simply turning 3 doesn’t automatically make a child ready for the school environment. It’s okay to wait.
  • Take note of your child’s behavior out of school. Does his/her anxiety appear to be interfering with homelife, sleeping patterns, behaviors, etc.? These could be clues that your child is not ready for preschool. If anxiety is severe or impacting your child’s development, consult with a pediatrician or child psychologist for guidance.
